How do I clean my traditional timber floor?

Timber floors are best cleaned with a damp cloth. Sticky spills or more determined dirt can be removed by taking a bucket of warm water (3 litres) with a tablespoon of methylated spirits, which can then be used to lightly mop the floor. This doesnt leave any residue, as the mixture will simply evaporate.

WARNING: Use a damp cloth only, not a wet cloth, as the excess water can soak into the gaps between the floor boards causing lasting damage. Avoid using polishes, waxes or household detergents to remove stains, dirt or marks, as this will dull the floor. Soaps, liquid ammonia, vinegar or silicon cleaners should not be used on timber floors.
